Do you know how it feels when you are on a plane and it is getting quite rocky? Have you ever felt the nausea setting in as you enter into the 'scared zone'? MANY of YOU are RIGHT THERE, RIGHT NOW. It isn't about motion sicknes though, it is about the roller coaster ride that you are on with your employers, positions, and clientele. The road is bumpy. You are being catapulted around the cabin. The pilot isn't communicating. It seems that the standard format for companies has, pardon the pun, gone out the window.
I wish I could say that the plane will even out and the pilot will begin to communicate fluidly and frequently. I am not projecting that it will happen that way. What I can say is that keeping your eyes on the horizon will take away some of the angst that you feel and allow you to concentrate on the things that really matter.
You cannot MAKE your company communicate better. You cannot FORCE them to promote you, recognize you, keep you, or any of the other things that you are communicating to me frustrate you to all end. Companies have moved into cacoon mode. Just as we do when we lose a loved one and revert into a cacoon to heal and figure out how we will emerge into the world again, our companies have entered into a cacoon mode to figure out how and what they can become to make it through this tight economy.
In that mode, they are focusing their efforts on what it will take to survive. Their focus is not your career path or your career progression. Unfortunately, YOU must focus on YOUR CAREER PATH and CAREER PROGRESSION. You must enter into a cacoon of your own to ensure that you come out of this economy as a survivor.
You are responsible for your destiny. You must keep your eyes on the horizon. Like a chess game, you control where you move your pieces, where you work, and what positions you hold.
Don't sit back with your eyes closed and complain of nausea. Make the nausea go away by keeping your eyes on the horizon.
