Many people are aware that hospitals give away multiple millons of dollars in charitable care each year. This morning it got me thinking. Why aren't the banks and mortgage companies required to give away a small percentage of their homes and loans? If we have this burden on hospitals (many of which are making some of the lowest margins in the industry today), why wouldn't we expect the same charitable contributions from insurance companies, banks, mortgage companies, and big business. Hospitals deliver approximately 5% in charitable care. Shouldn't the car makers, refrigerator makers, etc also be required to 'give away' a little of what they produce?
It seems unbalanced to me that more people are losing their homes- so more homes sit empty while many have no place to stay. We lack creative thinking when it comes to solving business dilemmas. Banks could offer free 2 year leases for families willing to pay utilities and fix up the homes. We are stuck in conventional ideas in a world with problems that will require new creative thinking.
Walk outside of the box that you are trapped in and create a unique solution for your company. Present that solution to senior leadership. You may be amazed at the results. There are answers to these tough problems that we face- all of which are outside of the box.
