School Prayer

I didn't write this, it is a post I took from facebook, written by a student.  I do believe that this great country got this way because it is One Nation Under God.  What have we done to not allow God's name spoken in the schools of our great country?  How could we have gone so far off course from our forefathers?  How could we let ourselves get to this point, far away from the God that blessed our nation and paved the road for the life we enjoy?  How could we say that it is wrong to do what we came to this country to do?  We came to worship God.

We didn't have shootings in school when we allowed God's name to be spoken.  What have we done?

Now I sit me down in school
Where praying is against the rule
For this great nation under God
Finds mention of Him very odd.

If scripture now the class recites,
It violates the Bill of Rights.
And anytime my head I bow
Becomes a Federal matter now.

Our hair can be purple, orange or green,
That's no offense; it's a freedom scene.
The law is specific, the law is precise.
Prayers spoken aloud are a serious vice.

For praying in a public hall
Might offend someone with no faith at all.
In silence alone we must meditate,
God's name is prohibited by the state.

We're allowed to cuss and dress like freaks,
And pierce our noses, tongues and cheeks.
They've outlawed guns, but FIRST the Bible.
To quote the Good Book makes me liable.

We can elect a pregnant Senior Queen,
And the 'unwed daddy,' our Senior King.
It's 'inappropriate' to teach right from wrong,
We're taught that such 'judgments' do not belong.

We can get our condoms and birth controls,
Study witchcraft, vampires and totem poles.
But the Ten Commandments are not allowed,
No word of God must reach this crowd.

It's scary here I must confess,
When chaos reigns the school's a mess.
So, Lord, this silent plea I make:
Should I be shot; My soul please take

 

A Message for the highschoolers at Hamady High School in Flint Michigan (my old school) and for all of us that need a little perspective

My advice to you? I know things are hard. But there is one piece of advice that I wish I had when I was your age. It is this: Get yourself a new ruler in which to measure your situation. I have traveled 2 million miles, I've gone around the world and back- and over again. Do you know what I've discovered? That we live in the promised land.

I've seen china, japan, thailand, europe, africa- all to discover that we live in the best place on earth. I wish I would have used a different ruler to measure my life when I was your age. I've seen children in africa that would die from starvation- while we complain about not getting that new pair of tennis shoes. Are you unhappy in your situation? Go to the childrens hospital and walk through the cancer ward. You will see babies, little four year olds and 10 year olds facing life threatening cancer.

Do you think your mom is too strict? Go to the juvenile hall and visit the kids in there. Some of them had no boundaries. Walk through a jail. Do you think your house is a junk heap? Volunteer to go on a mission trip to africa where they live on a cement slab, or spend some time in Alaska where some of the houses allow steady streams of sub zero winds to blow through the walls.

Get yourself a new perspective- a new ruler to measure your life. You've just lost your job- you can either look at it as a blessing- a chance to find something you will love to do- or a curse. Lost your house- you can either see it as a chance to consider relocating to a state, city or town where you can make a better life- or you can see it as a terrible curse.

You think your life is sad? Go volunteer at the homeless shellter downtown. Spend some time with the battered women there. I dare you. I can get you a tour- my dad works there teaching the residents to improve their reading and writing skills. Find a way to see what you can't see today. When I was in africa - I was amazed. Every single person I talked to wanted to come to the US. Life would be better for them if they could just live here. And shame on any of us who live here and don't thank God for it everyday.

Can you imagine waking up one day to a man spearing you to death because you didn't vote for his candidate? Once you find that new 'ruler'- that new perspective- then what....?

Find what you were put on the earth to do- find your passion- your strengths. Every one of you have distinct strengths that you can do better than anyone else.
